Day 1: City Tour of Arequipa
We will begin our tour by visiting one of the city’s traditional neighborhoods, the district of Cayma, crossing the Chilina Bridge, which will provide us with a view of the city and the terraces carved from the banks of the Chili River. In Cayma, we will visit the main square and its church, where the Dominican Order built a hermitage in 1544, which is now home to the Virgin of Candelaria sanctuary. After this visit, we will continue to Añashuayco, where the emblematic white volcanic stone known as “sillar” has been quarried for use in the construction of Arequipa’s buildings since the colonial period. Upon our arrival in Añashuayco, our guide will give us more information about the geological origin and formation of the quarries, and we will have the chance to observe the extraction of the volcanic stone. Continuing our excursion, we will visit the district of Yanahuara, including the popular Antiquilla market, which has retained the colonial-era infrastructure of old Arequipa. We will then continue to Yanahuara, with its viewing point offering the finest view of the city and the volcanoes that line the horizon. Here we can wander the narrow streets before heading for the main square, where our guide will introduce us to the history of the city and the construction of historic buildings, including the cathedral. Our tour will end at Santa Catalina convent, where our guide will be there to assist those members of the group who wish to visit this attraction (the convent visit is not included in the City Tour).
