Itinerary:
Day 1: Salar de Uyuni – Sunset
We will depart from Uyuni and head to the Train Graveyard, located just ten minutes outside the city of Uyuni. We will then visit Colchani, a small community that forms the entrance to the salt pans, where local people make their living exploiting the salt. Here, visitors can buy handcrafts made from salt. The Salar de Uyuni covers an area of approximately
10,582 square kilometers. On average, the layer of salt is between 6 and 10 meters deep, making it the thickest salt deposit in the world (it is estimated that the Salar de Uyuni contains around 10 billion tons of salt, or sodium chloride, lithium, boron, magnesium, potassium, strontium, etc.). We will explore the pyramids of salt, where workers remove the layer of salt and pile it up so it can dry out in the sun. Following this drying process, the salt is transported to the village of Colchani to be processed and sold. We will continue to the Hotel de Sal [“Hotel of Salt”], the first hotel to be built from salt blocks, situated in the middle of the salt pans and now a museum. Finally, we will head to Incahuasi Island, a place of extraordinary beauty where giant cacti up to 12 meters in height grow. After visiting Incahuasi Island, we will return to Uyuni.
